Admittedly, watching TV can help viewers improve their oral English significantly. For language learners, it is an effective way to imitate how actors in TV programs speak since many actors have really standard accents and pronunciations. If viewers can keep on imitating those actors for a long time, they are also likely to speak a language correctly and fluently. Nevertheless, admitting the benefit of watching TV programs is not assuming that it is a better method than reading.
To begin with, reading books encourages readers to make use of their imagination. When writers describe some figures or scenes, they will use a lot of adjectives and metaphors. Then, since many books do not have images, readers have to use their own imagination to think about how beautiful some figures or scenes are. During this process, readers’ imagination can be improved while TV programs directly provide viewers with images, depriving viewers’ of the opportunity to exercise their imagination.
In addition, readers can improve their writing skills through reading. The best way to expand one’s vocabulary is not to memorize words for several times; instead, learning how to use words and phrases in specific contexts can more effectively enlarge vocabulary and improve writing skills. Through reading books, readers can learn how famous writers use words and phrases in different contexts. Then, when they begin to compose an essay or an article, what they learn from books can help them significantly.
To sum up, considering that reading books ask readers to use imagination, and readers can learn how to write through imitating writers, reading books is more beneficial than watching TV programs for people.
