1、“强降雨、暴雨”的说法
CNN：
Heavy rain in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou has broken a record, according to the city's meteorological bureau Tuesday.
Torrential rains have hit central China's Henan province since Friday, affecting more than 144,660 residents, according to China's state news agency Xinhua on Tuesday. More than 10,000 have been relocated to safer places.
CNN 和 BBC 在报道河南暴雨时，全篇用了很多不同的词表示“暴雨、倾盆大雨”，以上是两个例句。可用词汇包括：heavy rain、torrential rains、unusually heavy rains、heavy downpour、record rainfall （降雨量破纪录）、extreme rainfall （极端降雨、特大降雨）。
2、降雨量到底有多大？
CNN：
"The hourly precipitation and single-day precipitation this time have broken through the historical record of 60 years since the establishment of Zhengzhou Meteorological Bureau in 1951," the Zhengzhou Meteorological Department said in a video it posted explaining the rainfall.
"The precipitation the city had in the last three days was already tantamount to the total amount of the precipitation the city had last year," the department said.
郑州市气象局发布了一段解释此次降雨的视频，其表示：“此次每小时降水量和单日降水量打破了自1951年郑州市气象局成立以来60年的历史记录。”

比起 rain，precipitation 是比较专业的说法，表示“降水”。hourly precipitation 每小时降水量，single-day precipitation 单日降水量。
break through the historical record 打破历史记录
注：historical 指“历史上的”，historic 指“具有历史意义的”
tantamount to sth 是比较正式的表达，意思是 having the same bad effect as sth else “无异于；等于；效果与…一样坏”。例：To leave a dog home alone is tantamount to cruelty. 把狗独自留在家里等于虐待。
"The precipitation the city had in the last three days was already tantamount to the total amount of the precipitation the city had last year," the department said. 这句话在BBC新闻里有更简单通俗的说法：
The amount of rain over the last three days in Zhengzhou is reported to be the same as what it would usually receive in an entire year.
据报道，郑州过去三天的降雨量相当于往年全年的降雨量。
3、暴雨中的城市景象
CNN：
Vehicles are stranded after a heavy downpour in Zhengzhou city, central China's Henan province on Tuesday.

strand 是“搁浅；滞留”：The climbers had been stranded by a storm. 这些登山者被暴风雨困住了。
inundate “淹没”，既可以表示实际被水淹没，也可以表示抽象意义的被大量信件、请求等“淹没”：
- Their neighbourhood is being inundated by the rising waters of the Colorado River. 他们的临近区域正被科罗拉多河不断上涨的河水所淹没。
- Her office was inundated with requests for tickets. 她的办公室接到了铺天盖地的索票请求。
BBC：
Images on social media showed entire streets submerged, with cars and debris left drifting in the fast-moving floodwaters.

In Zhengzhou, unverified video footage showed passengers in flooded subway carriages with water reaching their shoulders.
